I have a new puppy/ kitten when should it be vaccinated?

The reason we vaccinate our pets (and ourselves!!) is to prevent life threatening diseases. Vaccines are one of the world’s modern medical marvels, and have helped to virtually eliminate tragic human diseases like Polio and Small Pox. In a similar manner, the more of our domestic pets that are vaccinated, the less risk there is of serious and fatal diseases like parvo virus continuing to exist.

The primary puppy/kitten vaccination course is commenced at approximately 6 weeks. This is to provide protection against disease as the immunity provided through the mother’s milk begins to decrease. If you have an older pet that is unvaccinated, any time is a good time vaccinate against preventable diseases.

Vaccines are referred to as “Core Vaccines and Non Core” Vaccines. Core Vaccinations are essential for all our furry friends as these diseases are easily transferred and /or are fatal. Non Core Vaccines are more dependent on lifestyle or environmental exposure.

Some vaccines have been shown to provide protection for longer than originally thought, allowing us to vaccinate at intervals up to 3 years apart against Parvovirus, distemper and canine hepatitis.

Your animal’s lifestyle, environment and the animals he or she is exposed to all have a bearing on which vaccines will provide the most effective protection. Please ask one of our Townsville Vet Clinic Veterinarians about tailoring a vaccination program specific to your furry family member’s needs.
