My neighbour is complaining about my dog barking. What should I do?

The natural thing to do when someone complains about your dog is to get defensive. “My dog? Causing a problem? How dare you?!”

You can’t assume your dog has been a saint all day just because he’s asleep when you get home.

Remember, it’s all about perception, and your neighbour’s perception is his reality. Instead of being defensive, try these things:

Listen – Unless one of you plans to move, defusing the situation beats all-out war.
Empathise and Apologise – Without admitting guilt, empathise with your complainer.
Take Action – Make changes to accommodate your neighbour and protect your dog. For example: If their complaint is early-morning noise and the barking when you let him/her out at 6:00 am while you shower, alter your routine. Get up earlier and go out with him/her. Let her eliminate, and then play with him/her. Keep him/her quietly occupied rather than leaving him/her to find their own entertainment.
